The Philadelphia Dramatist Center (PDC) is a league of playwrights and other dramatists who devote their time and energy to blossom new works in Philadelphia. We provide an avenue for play development for playwrights, both of those who are advanced in their careers or those who are just beginning their journey. We promote the spirit of collaboration within Philadelphia, as artists come together and attend our workshops, perform in our reading series, and find meaningful relationships through our development programs.
The Philadelphia Dramatists Center is a volunteer nonprofit membership based organization. In order to have year round access to the programs we provide playwrights, you have to become a member.
WHAT BENEFITS DO MEMBERS GET?
The Philadelphia Dramatists Center is a member based collective of playwrights, dramaturges, and theatre professionals, all gathering to promote new work development. As a PDC Member, not only will you be in line with some of Philadelphia’s greatest artists, but you will also be given many benefits and opportunities, such as:
1 Free Hour with a PDC Resident Dramaturg on Your Script
Our dramaturgs are so crazy smart, you’ll be blown away by the feedback they’ll provide on your script. Want additional hours? Tell them, and for a small fee you can sign up for additional sessions!
Be a Part of the PDC Reading Series
Need a play read, but don’t know any actors or directors? Our Resident Dramaturgs will facilitate the process. All you need to provide is the script (well, and some money for the actors).
Whether you want to relax on a Saturday afternoon going through new works at Writer’s Circle, or grab a beer on a Monday at the Playwrights’ Happy Hour, the PDC is here to provide you with year round workshops. Read more about each by clicking their names!
Generate New Material With Group Writing Sessions!
Unplugged lets you get into a room with other playwrights to do two things: write, and not write alone. Held four times a year, keep an eye out for the next unplugged session on our calendar!
Apply to Different PDC Produced Reading Series
You will get rehearsal time with professional actors and directors to prepare your materials for presentation, and take your scripts to the next level.
Publicity on our PDC Listserv/Facebook Page!
Do you have a reading coming up? Send out Communications Manager all of the information, and your announcement will be read by over 300+ members through our Weekly Email and our Facebook Pages!
Yearly Events with Food and Drink!
Join the Bake Off! that we hold every year, giving the membership an opportunity to come together, and write plays with the same ingredients. A fun exercise to partake in, and to see what your fellow members can cook up!
The PDC Annual Membership Meeting every October is a chance for members to come together, discuss the PDC, eat, and be merry! Every year PDC gets older, and gets better, so a celebration is definitely in order!
All That And More To Come For $50!
As you read this, the board is hard at work in a secret underground laboratory, carefully crafting and testing out new programming for Dramatists, and figuring out how to provide even more benefits to our members. We’re even looking into ways for you to publicize your work on our website! But even with just what we list above, $50 a year is not a bad deal. With that $50, you can attend workshops and readings for a whole year!
Where Does My $50 Go?
The fees for your membership doesn’t go into anyone’s pockets. Again, the organization is helmed by playwrights and artists who want to raise other playwrights in the spirit of community. Your money goes straight into funding our programming, our maintenance bills (website, meeting spaces, etc.), and allows us to gauge what new programming we can create next.
Sorry, But $50 Is Just Too Much For Me Right Now…
We understand. Playwrights’ aren’t exactly the richest demographic. That is why the PDC set aside a small fund to aid those unable to pay the amount. To apply for an Assisted Membership, please email [email protected] with the subject “Assisted Membership Application” with your up to date resume, and a cover letter indicating . As of right now, we can only afford to offer three of these memberships a year — keep in mind that this is for those who truly want to participate, but cannot afford, the price of our membership.
In addition, the PDC offers a $25 student rate for those in college.
