What Is Anonymous Theatre?

A group of playwrights is chosen to write a play together... secretly. But the identity of the playwrights is kept secret, even from the playwrights themselves.

A director is chosen and auditions are held. The play is cast... secretly.

The identity of the cast is kept secret. Cast members do not know the identity of their fellow actors and do not reveal their participation in the project to anyone.

The actors rehearse one-on-one with the director. Then, on the night of the performance, the cast arrives in street clothes and enters the theatre as members of the audience. They take their seats, chat with their neighbors, and behave like normal audience members.

The house lights dim and the play begins, with each actor delivering his or her first line from the audience. All the cast members discover one another's identity for the first time on stage, in front of a live audience.

A Sneak Peak At AT2009

This year's script will be a play written collaboratively in the style of Tennessee Williams.

While the actors in the play are kept secret, the roles that those actors play are not. Here is a list of some of the characters found in Anonymous Theatre 2009:

  • Raymond, not old but prematurely withered, an emaciated specter
  • Daddy Christian, a bear of a man in a dapper light colored suit
  • Kingsley, a slight man barely out of his teens
  • The Photographer, dressed in a garish and flamboyant outfit, with a hot bod and Brad Pitt's hair from Burn After Reading
  • Eclectus, a tropical-bird-like creature with lush and gaudy plumage and a voice as grating on the ear as the sight is pleasing on the eye
  • Rhea, another bird-creature/woman, sister of Eclectus
  • Lorikeet, the third sister
  • Manley Borkowski, a man with Brando good looks and mannerisms, in his fifties
