What Is Anonymous Theatre?
A group of playwrights is chosen to write a play together... secretly. But the identity of the playwrights is kept secret, even from the playwrights themselves.
A director is chosen and auditions are held. The play is cast... secretly.
The identity of the cast is kept secret. Cast members do not know the identity of their fellow actors and do not reveal their participation in the project to anyone.
The actors rehearse one-on-one with the director. Then, on the night of the performance, the cast arrives in street clothes and enters the theatre as members of the audience. They take their seats, chat with their neighbors, and behave like normal audience members.
The house lights dim and the play begins, with each actor delivering his or her first line from the audience. All the cast members discover one another's identity for the first time on stage, in front of a live audience.
The Skinny on AT2010
A first draft of the script for Anonymous Theatre 2010 has been completed!
What happens when a secret "shareformance" of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and another of Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya end up accidentally happening at the same time, in the same theatre? Even more madness than you'd normally expect from Anonymous Theatre. This year's production, written collaboratively by a group of anonymous local playwrights, features a host of characters from both plays and an assortment of sundry other special guests.
Carol received her BA in Theatre from Bloomsburg University before completing a directing and dramaturgy internship with Portland Stage Company. She has directed for a number of local companies including Theatre Catalyst, The Eternal Spiral Project, Secret Room Theatre, Plays & Players, and LaSalle University. A teaching artist and acting coach, she has taught classes for the Wilma Theater’s Studio School and Wilmagination program. Carol is an Affiliate Artist and founding member of Simpatico Theatre Project, where she served as Producing Artistic Director from inception until 2010, directing its productions of Stop Kiss, Angels Fall, Getting Out, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, and Pyretown.
